Why Choose a US-Based Graphic Designer?

What actually changes when the designer sits inside the market you sell into.

📐

US Print Standards Built In

US Letter at 8.5 by 11 inches, Tabloid at 11 by 17, cards at 3.5 by 2 inches and 0.125 inch bleed are the defaults here, not a conversion from A4.

🗣️

American English on the Artwork

Color, center, catalog, gray and license, plus month-day-year dates and imperial dimensions. Small conventions, but a US audience notices them instantly.

🔎

Built for Where Americans Search

Google carries most web search, Amazon is where many product searches begin, Pinterest drives home and food discovery, and Bing holds real desktop share. Each has its own crop rules.

🕐

Real Working Overlap

Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific mean your designer is awake when your stakeholders are. A 10am Eastern revision can come back the same working day.

Verified Before They Sell

Every Zinner is ID- and skill-verified, and reviews come only from confirmed purchases. You read a delivery record, not anonymous praise.

🛡️

Payment Protection on Every Order

Your payment is held by Zinn Hub on platform-protected orders until the order completes, and buyers pay no platform fee. On the seller side, Zinners pay 0% commission on their first $500 Zinners who connect their own PayPal or Stripe are paid directly at checkout.

The Practical Guide to Hiring US Graphic Designers

What the American design market really looks like, and how to brief and judge the work.

Who You Are Actually Hiring

American graphic design is not one market. At one end sit studio-trained brand designers from programmes such as RISD, Parsons or ArtCenter who price like a small agency; at the other sits a large population of independents who left in-house roles at retailers, publishers and consumer-goods brands. On the graphic design marketplace you meet both, and the difference is rarely software skill — it is category exposure. Someone who has shipped forty consumer packs knows what survives a shelf test; someone who has built thirty investor decks knows what a partner meeting does to one. Price follows specialism and liability: regulated packaging and supplement labelling cost more because a reprint is expensive, while a single social asset is often a $5 to $20 Micro Zinn.

American English and Style Conventions

The working language is English, but the details differ from British English and they show. US spelling drops the u in colour and favour, ends words in -er rather than -re (center, theater, fiber), and uses catalog, gray, check, license and program. Dates run month-day-year, so 04/09 reads as the fourth of September to nobody in America. Measurements are imperial, phone numbers format as (555) 123-4567, prices as $1,299.00. Editorial work follows either AP style, which prefers sentence-case headlines, or the Chicago Manual of Style, which prefers title case — agree which before a designer sets a hundred headings. Spanish is widely spoken at home in the United States, so bilingual packaging is routine, and Spanish text typically runs longer than English: a layout that only just fits will break.

Where Americans Search, and What That Does to Design

Google carries the large majority of US web search, so anything designed to earn a click there — Business Profile photos, article hero images, video thumbnails — is judged small and in a crowded page. Bing keeps a meaningful minority share on Windows and Edge desktops, which skews older and more corporate. But the most important US search box for product design is Amazon, where a large share of American product searches begin: the main image is a phone thumbnail on pure white and has to read at roughly 200 pixels wide. Pinterest behaves as a real visual search engine for home, food, wedding and craft categories, rewarding tall 2:3 creative with legible overlaid type. A good designer asks which surfaces the asset is for, and delivers a crop set. See social media design and infographic specialists, or pair one with US social media managers.

Time Zones and Realistic Overlap

The mainland US spans four zones — Eastern (UTC−5 standard time, UTC−4 in summer), Central, Mountain and Pacific (UTC−8 standard time, UTC−7 in summer) — so New York and Los Angeles are three hours apart. Daylight saving runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and most of Arizona and all of Hawaii do not observe it, which quietly shifts your overlap twice a year. From the UK, London is usually five hours ahead of Eastern — four for the few weeks each year when the two switch on different dates — so a designer working 9am to 5pm Eastern is reachable roughly 2pm to 10pm UK time; on Pacific that window is roughly 5pm to 1am UK, so book reviews before lunch. State every deadline with its zone attached and plan around the calendar: Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November and most consumer brands freeze creative from mid-November, so Q4 artwork is commissioned in August and September.

US Print and Packaging Standards Overseas Designers Miss

This is where hiring inside the US saves the most rework. American trade printers run US Letter (8.5 × 11 in), Legal (8.5 × 14 in) and Tabloid (11 × 17 in), not A4 and A3; the standard business card is 3.5 × 2 inches, not 85 × 55 mm; and bleed is 0.125 inch, not 3 mm. Direct mail sized for USPS Every Door Direct Mail has permitted dimensions and a mandatory clear area for the indicia — get it wrong and the post office refuses the drop. For packaging, the FDA Nutrition Facts panel has a prescribed format and type sizing, alcohol labels need TTB approval, and consumer goods need a net quantity statement in both US customary and metric units. Print files should arrive CMYK at 300 dpi with crop marks, rich black for large areas and 100% K for small text, and the dieline on its own locked layer. Pantone libraries are no longer bundled with Creative Cloud, so agree whether you get Pantone references or CMYK builds. Start with packaging and label design.

Trademarks, Fonts, Stock and Accessibility

Four legal points recur. Trademark clearance: search the USPTO register before you commit to a wordmark, because designers can advise but are not attorneys. Ownership: under US law the work made for hire doctrine does not automatically cover an independent contractor, so ask for an explicit written assignment of copyright in the deliverables. Licensing: fonts and stock carry separate desktop, web, app and merchandise licences, and a cheap stock photo does not cover a t-shirt run. Accessibility: US web accessibility is actively litigated, and WCAG 2.1 AA is the working benchmark — 4.5:1 contrast for body text, 3:1 for large text and interface elements, and no meaning carried by colour alone. A designer who raises contrast before you do is a good sign, and the same instinct shows in US web design work.

Briefing the Job and Judging the Result

Most disappointing outcomes trace back to a brief that described a feeling instead of a job. A brief a US designer can price contains: one sentence on what the business does and who buys; the final size and substrate or platform for every asset; a numbered deliverable list with file formats; the mandatories you cannot change; three examples you admire and three you dislike, with reasons; who signs off and how many rounds are included; and a deadline with its reason attached. For broader work, post it free on Zinn Hub projects or start from Zinn Finder.

Then judge process, not polish. Ask to see a logo at 16 pixels, in one colour and reversed out; a mark that only works at hero size on a gradient is not finished. At delivery you should receive an editable master — layered Illustrator, InDesign or Figma files with fonts and links packaged — plus outlined vector for print, SVG and PNG for web, and a one-page brand style guide carrying HEX, RGB, CMYK and Pantone values. A flattened JPEG and nothing else is not an asset you own. The logo design cost guide sets expectations for the commonest request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about hiring graphic designers in the USA.

A US-based designer already works in American English, US Letter and Tabloid sizes, inch-based bleed and imperial dielines, so print and packaging artwork lands press-ready first time. They also know the surfaces Americans search and browse, from Amazon listing images to Pinterest and Etsy thumbnails, and they overlap with US business hours for same-day feedback.

Typical marketplace ranges on Zinn Hub run from $5 to $20 for a Micro Zinn such as a single social post, roughly $75 to $900 for a logo and core identity, and roughly $900 to $3,500 or more for a full brand system with packaging. These are observed ranges, not a Zinn Hub guarantee: every Zinner sets their own price in USD.

Ask for a layered master in Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign, plus outlined vector as EPS or PDF/X-1a for print, SVG and PNG for web, and a favicon set. Print files should be CMYK at 300 dpi with 0.125 inch bleed and crop marks. For brand work, add a one-page sheet of HEX, RGB, CMYK and Pantone values and the font licences you may use.
