Why Hire a Cambodia SEO Specialist?

The engine is the one you know. The language, the devices and the addresses are not.

🔎

One Engine, Local Rules

Google takes the great majority of Cambodian search, so there is no national engine to court. What differs is intent: Khmer queries are shorter, more spoken and far less tool-visible.

🈶

Native Khmer, Not Translation

Khmer runs words together without spaces and stacks consonants below the line. A specialist writes it natively and checks that it renders, rather than machine-translating English copy.

📱

Phone-First Reality

Most Cambodians reach the web on a mid-range Android handset over mobile data. Page weight, Khmer webfont size and tap targets decide whether you rank and convert.

📍

Maps Over Street Numbers

A Phnom Penh address is a street number, a Sangkat and a Khan, and postcodes are recent. Pin accuracy, photos and Khmer business names carry the local pack.

💬

Search Is Not Only Search

Much Cambodian product research happens inside Facebook groups and Telegram channels, not a search box. Counting Google positions alone misses where buying starts.

🛡️

whole-order payment protection

Payment is held until you confirm the work meets the agreed specification. Reviews come only from confirmed purchases, and buyers pay no platform fee.

The Practical Guide to SEO in Cambodia

What the market looks like, what to brief, and how to judge the work.

One search engine, two languages, one device

There is no domestic search engine to court. Google takes the overwhelming share of Cambodian queries, so the ranking system and the tooling are the ones you know; YouTube is the strong second surface. Everything else differs. Most Cambodians reach the web through a mid-range Android phone on a prepaid data plan, so a page that passes a lab test on a laptop can still be unusable on the handsets your buyers own. A serious technical SEO pass starts from real-device mobile performance, and Core Web Vitals should be read from Cambodian field data. Much discovery never touches a search box either: Facebook pages and groups are the default shopfront for businesses with no website, and Telegram carries much wholesale trade.

Khmer is a technical problem before it is a content problem

Khmer script puts no spaces between words. Spaces mark the end of a phrase instead, and word boundaries are inferred by the reader or, on the web, by an invisible zero-width space inserted for line breaking. The engine therefore has to segment the query itself, so a literal translation of your English head term often matches nothing anyone types, and keyword tools have thin Khmer coverage with heavily rounded volumes. A tidy Khmer volume spreadsheet is a warning sign, not a deliverable: real keyword research here leans on Search Console data from your own site, autocomplete, YouTube suggestions and competitor copy.

Encoding and rendering come next. Before Khmer Unicode settled, Cambodian publishing ran on legacy Limon-style fonts that mapped Khmer glyphs onto Latin code points; that text looks perfect in the original layout and is gibberish to a crawler. Khmer also stacks subscript consonants below the baseline, so at English line heights the glyphs clip and collide: you need a real Khmer font stack, with Noto Sans Khmer, Battambang and Hanuman the usual choices, plus generous line spacing and subsetting, because Khmer webfonts are heavy and page speed is decided on mobile data. If you publish in both languages, use two separate URL sets annotated with hreflang, typically km-KH and en-KH plus an x-default; swapping a page language in place with no distinct URL is the commonest cause of the wrong-language page ranking. International SEO Zinners do this routinely, as do our Cambodia content writing Zinners.

Local SEO in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the provinces

Cambodian addresses do not behave like Western ones. A Phnom Penh location is a numbered street, a Sangkat (commune) and a Khan (district); provincial towns use Krong; and the postcode system is recent and inconsistently used. So the map pin, the photos, the Khmer business name and the opening hours do the heavy lifting, while a tidy address line does little. A competent local scope covers pin accuracy, duplicate-listing cleanup, category selection, and Khmer plus English fields on one Google Business Profile. Siem Reap behaves like a different country commercially, being tourism-led, English-language and seasonal, while Sihanoukville skews to property, logistics and an online gaming sector, which is why some Zinners specialise in iGaming SEO. In thinner provincial markets one good listing and a few genuine citations win the pack outright; wider tactics sit on our local SEO marketplace hub.

Sectors, payments and English-language work

Local depth clusters in tourism and hospitality, property and rentals, education, NGO communications, logistics and export, and retail selling through a website and a Facebook page in parallel. Payments matter to conversion: Cambodian checkouts commonly support ABA PAY, Wing and KHQR through the Bakong system, and a store offering only international cards converts badly however well it ranks. The economy is heavily dollarised, so most Cambodian sites already quote in US dollars. Many Zinners here also work purely in English for overseas clients, on audits, schema markup and ecommerce SEO. Regionally, our Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore SEO pages cover the neighbours.

Time zone, working week and holidays

Cambodia is on Indochina Time, with no daylight saving, so your overlap shifts twice a year and theirs never does. A Cambodian afternoon from about 3pm covers the UK morning, shifting by an hour when the UK changes its clocks; a Cambodian evening covers the opening of the US East Coast day; Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Perth sit within an hour. The week runs Monday to Friday, with Saturday mornings still normal in smaller agencies. Three holiday periods genuinely stop work: Khmer New Year in mid-April, which runs longer than its official days as people travel to home provinces; Pchum Ben in September or October; and the Water Festival in November. Schedule migrations and launches around them.

What a good Cambodia SEO brief contains

The brief is the biggest quality lever you control, and it costs twenty minutes. Include the live URL and CMS; whether you need Khmer, English or both, and who may approve Khmer copy; read-only Search Console and Analytics access, non-negotiable beyond a cosmetic audit; where the site is hosted and what the homepage costs a Cambodian phone to load; whether a .com.kh is in play; who owns the Google Business Profile; three competitors ranking for Khmer queries rather than global brands; the outcome you want, such as enquiries or bookings; the deliverable format and reporting cadence; and your meeting window in Phnom Penh time. Our guide to writing a project brief goes deeper, and posting a project is free.

How to judge quality, before and after you hire

Rank screenshots prove very little: results are personalised, localised and trivially edited in a browser. Ask instead for a Search Console view filtered to Cambodia, showing impressions, clicks and average position over time, and ask which Khmer keyword sources were used; expect a real answer about segmentation, not a tool export. Ask for a short Khmer writing sample, have a native speaker read it aloud, then open the page on a phone to confirm it renders without missing-glyph boxes or colliding lines. A credible SEO audit names the defect, the page, the fix and the expected effect. On links, be sceptical: expired-domain private blog networks and paid placements on Khmer content farms are a liability, whereas legitimate link building means universities, chambers of commerce, tourism boards and real supplier pages. Agree a fixed scope and a success measure before any money moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about hiring SEO experts for the Cambodian market.

Google handles the overwhelming majority of search in Cambodia, so there is no Baidu-style local engine to optimise for separately. What differs is language, device and habit: most searching happens on a phone, much research happens inside Facebook and Telegram, and Khmer queries behave differently from their English equivalents.

Khmer is written without spaces between words, so the engine segments the query itself and keyword tools report thin, rounded volumes. Text left in the pre-Unicode Limon encoding is unreadable to crawlers even though it looks correct on screen. Khmer also needs a real font stack and a generous line height.

It depends on who is buying. Tourism, NGO, export and B2B audiences often search in English, while consumer retail, property and local services skew Khmer. If you need both, publish two separate URL sets marked up with hreflang values km-KH and en-KH, rather than machine-translating one page in place.

No. A .com domain with Khmer content, a Cambodia-targeted Google Business Profile and local links ranks perfectly well. A .com.kh is registered locally and asks for business documentation, so it earns its keep mainly as a trust signal. Hosting near the region, usually Singapore, matters far more.

Cambodia runs on Indochina Time, with no daylight saving. A Cambodian afternoon covers the UK morning and a Cambodian evening covers the start of the US East Coast day, while Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong share almost the whole working day. Plan around Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben and the Water Festival.

Typical marketplace ranges are roughly $80 to $350 for a technical and Khmer keyword audit, $250 to $900 a month for ongoing optimisation and content, and $900 upwards for a full bilingual programme. Small one-off tasks run as Micro Zinns from $5 to $20. These are indicative ranges rather than a Zinn Hub guarantee.

Every Zinner is ID- and skill-verified, and reviews come only from confirmed purchases. With a Platform Protected Zinner the payment is held for the whole order and released when you confirm the work meets the specification you agreed. Buyers pay no platform fee, posting a project is free, and over 100 payment methods are supported for buyers.
