Malaysia’s language map, and what it means for your copy

Malaysia has roughly 34 million people and no single dominant written language. Bahasa Malaysia is the national language of government, schooling and most Malay-language media; English is a working language of business and law, taught from primary school; Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien are used daily by the Chinese Malaysian community, and Tamil by a substantial Indian Malaysian community. Time zones, the working week and turnaround

Malaysia runs on UTC+8 year round with no daylight saving, so a 9am to 6pm Malaysian day is 1am to 10am UTC. A UK client gets a live window of one to two hours at the start of the British morning, depending on British Summer Time; a US East Coast client gets none inside normal office hours, so the workable overlap is the American evening, which is Malaysian mid-morning. Sydney is two to three hours ahead of Malaysia and India two and a half behind. For Asia-Pacific brands this is close to ideal; for US brands, plan asynchronously and put every deadline in Malaysian time.

Two calendar facts save confusion. The weekend is not uniform: Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Johor take Friday and Saturday off while the rest of the country takes Saturday and Sunday, so a writer in Johor Bahru and one in Penang have different quiet days. And around Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year many Malaysians travel home for several days, so agree delivery before the festival rather than during it.
