How many illustrations does a typical picture book need?

A standard 32-page picture book usually carries artwork on most interior spreads plus a cover, which commonly works out around twelve to fifteen illustrated spreads once front and back matter are allowed for. Count your spreads from the manuscript before enquiring, because almost every illustrator quotes by the number of finished illustrations.

Who owns the copyright to the illustrations?

Rights are agreed between you and the illustrator and are stated on the individual listing, so read that section carefully before ordering. Some Zinners transfer full commercial rights, others license the artwork for a defined use. If you plan to sell merchandise or licence the character later, raise it in the brief rather than after delivery.

What file formats do children’s book illustrators deliver?

For print, expect high-resolution files at 300 DPI in CMYK with bleed included, usually as PDF, TIFF or layered PSD. For digital editions, expect RGB PNG or JPEG at screen sizes. Ask for the layered working file as well if you may want text moved or a spread reused for promotion later.

How does illustration pricing work on Zinn Hub?

Each Zinner sets their own pricing and shows it upfront on the listing in USD. Rates commonly reflect the number of finished spreads, the complexity of the style, and whether character design and typesetting are included. There is no platform fee for buyers, and Micro Zinns priced between five and twenty dollars can be a low-risk way to trial a style.

What does the illustration process usually look like?

Most projects run through character sketches, then rough page thumbnails, then line art, then colour and final files. Feedback is easiest and cheapest at the sketch stage, so review carefully there rather than waiting for finished colour. Revision terms are set by each Zinner individually, so confirm how many rounds each stage includes before you order.

Will the artwork meet Amazon KDP requirements?

Many Zinners in this category list KDP experience and will build to the trim size, bleed and spine width the KDP cover calculator specifies. Give them your exact trim size and final page count upfront, since spine width depends on both. Confirm before ordering that print-ready export is part of the deliverable rather than an extra.
