# I Will Write Clear API Documentation Your Developers Can Follow From Day One

### Why most API docs fail

They describe the endpoints and skip the parts that actually stop people: how to authenticate, what a realistic request looks like, what the error means, and what to do about it. The reader then opens a support ticket, which is the cost documentation exists to remove.

### How I write it

From the source, not from memory. I read the routes, the validation layer and the error handlers, then call the API myself with real credentials. Every example in the documentation is a request I made and a response I received — no invented payloads, no status codes that the endpoint never returns.

### What the documentation contains

- Authentication: obtaining a token, refreshing it, and what happens when it expires mid-session.
- Every endpoint with parameters, a complete example request, and the real response shape.
- An error reference that maps each error code to a cause and a fix, rather than just repeating the message.
- A getting-started path that takes a new developer from zero to a successful call in under ten minutes.
- Rate limits, pagination, webhooks and idempotency explained where they actually apply.

### Format

Markdown in your repository, structured for OpenAPI or a docs site — whichever you will actually maintain. Code samples in the languages your users ask about, verified by running them. Postman or similar collection included if you want one.

### What I need

Repository access or the OpenAPI file, one working credential for a test environment, and any questions your support team is tired of answering. Those questions are the outline.

### Not included

Marketing copy. This documents what the software does, precisely; the landing page is a different craft.

### Turnaround and communication

A first complete draft usually arrives within a week, and you review it against the questions your own support team keeps answering. I would rather be corrected early by the engineer who knows the edge cases than deliver something polished and wrong. Every example in the final document has been executed against your API, so nothing in it is aspirational.
