# How to Hire a Freelance Writer

Anyone can produce words. Far fewer can produce words that do a job for your business. This guide covers which kind of writer to hire for which task, how to brief so you get usable copy first time, how to judge samples honestly, what to do about AI-assisted writing, and how to pay for words without paying by the word.

The short answer

## How do I hire a freelance writer?

Match the writer to the **job** rather than the word count: copywriters sell, content writers explain, technical writers document, editors repair. Brief the audience, the action you want and the facts only you hold, then judge candidates on samples written for a similar reader. Buy one small paid piece before commissioning a series, and agree edits and ownership in writing.

Prices are set by each Zinner and shown in USD; you can view an approximate equivalent in your own currency.

- 0% buyer fees
- Free project posting

Hiring a writer looks like the easiest freelance purchase and is quietly one of the hardest to get right. The output is cheap to produce and expensive to evaluate: a piece can be grammatical, on time, on topic and still useless, because it says nothing your reader did not already know.

What separates copy that works from copy that merely exists is almost never vocabulary. It is whether the writer understood who is reading, what that reader is deciding, and what your business actually knows that nobody else does. A writer cannot supply the third of those — only you can. This guide is mostly about how to hand it over properly, and how to spot the people who will use it well.

## Which kind of writer you need

Writing splits into specialisms that look similar on a profile page and are not remotely interchangeable in practice.

- CopywriterWrites to persuade: landing pages, ads, product descriptions, emails. Short, structural, conversion-focused. Browse [sales copy](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/sales-copy/) and [email copy](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/email-copy/).
- Content writerWrites to inform and to be found: articles, guides, blog posts. Longer form, research-led, usually search-aware. Browse [articles and blog posts](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/articles-and-blog-posts/) and [SEO writing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/articles-and-blog-posts/seo-writing/).
- Technical writerDocumentation, instructions, help centres, specifications. Prizes accuracy and structure over style. Browse [technical writing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/technical-writing/).
- GhostwriterWrites in someone else’s voice and stays invisible: books, thought-leadership, executive posts. A separate skill from writing in your own voice. Browse the [ghostwriting marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/ghostwriting-marketplace/).
- Editor and proofreaderTwo different jobs. Editing improves structure and argument; proofreading catches errors at the end. Browse [proofreading and editing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/proofreading-and-editing/).
- TranslatorCarries meaning into another language and, done well, adapts it for that market. Browse [translation](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/translation/).

Hiring across these is the commonest mistake in the category. An excellent content writer asked to write a landing page will produce something accurate, thorough and completely unpersuasive — and everyone will blame the writer.

## Decide what the words have to do

Before you count words, decide the outcome. Every piece of commissioned writing has exactly one primary job, and pretending otherwise is how you end up with copy that does none of them.

Ask yourself three questions. **Who is reading, and what do they already believe?** A page written for someone comparing three vendors is a different page from one written for someone who has never heard of the problem. **What should change in their head?** Understand something, trust you, choose you, do a task correctly. **How will you know it worked?** Enquiries, sign-ups, fewer support tickets, search visibility. Not “it reads well”.

Then decide how much of the substance you are supplying. This is the part buyers underestimate. A writer can research a topic, but they cannot invent your pricing logic, your customers’ objections or the three things your product does that competitors do not. Hand those over in bullet points and the writing gets dramatically better and usually cheaper, because half the work is already done.

## Writing a brief that produces usable copy

A strong writing brief is short and rich in facts. It should take you twenty minutes and save you two revision rounds.

- **The deliverable, counted.** One 1,500-word guide, or eight 600-word posts, or twelve product descriptions of 80 to 120 words.
- **Audience in one sentence.** Who, and what they are trying to decide.
- **The single action.** What the reader should do after reading. One, not four.
- **Facts only you have.** Prices, specifications, common objections, real customer questions, anything you can prove.
- **Voice.** Two or three examples of writing you like and a line on why. Formal or plain, British or American spelling, first person or third.
- **Non-negotiables.** Claims you cannot legally make, competitors you will not name, terminology you must use.
- **Format and delivery.** Google Doc, Word, plain text, pasted into a CMS, with or without headings and meta descriptions.
- **Revision rounds.** State the number. Two is a sensible standard.

Our guide to [writing a project brief that gets great proposals](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/how-to-write-a-project-brief/) covers the general shape, and [hourly vs fixed price](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelance-rates-explained-hourly-vs-fixed/) explains why a counted deliverable is what lets a writer quote a firm number.

## Where to find writers

Search from the work when the deliverable is clear, and from the person when the relationship matters more than the single piece.

For defined pieces, browse fixed-price listings by type — [content writing](https://zinnhub.com/content-writing-marketplace/), [copywriting](https://zinnhub.com/copywriting-marketplace/), [technical writing](https://zinnhub.com/technical-writing-marketplace/), [proofreading](https://zinnhub.com/proofreading-marketplace/), [translation](https://zinnhub.com/translation-marketplace/) or [resume writing](https://zinnhub.com/resume-writing-marketplace/). Category pages such as [website content](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/website-content/) and [creative writing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/creative-writing/) narrow it further.

For an ongoing relationship, browse people: [copywriting and sales copy freelancers](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/copywriting-sales-copy/), [proofreaders and editors](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/proofreading-editing/) and [ghostwriters](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/ghostwriting/), or by skill — [copywriting](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/copywriting/), [technical writing](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/technical-writing/), [proofreading](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/proofreading/). Or post the brief: **posting a project is free**, and you can aim it at [blog posts and articles](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/blog-posts-articles/), [copywriting and sales copy](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/copywriting-sales-copy/) or [technical writing](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/technical-writing/).

Prefer a writer with subject familiarity over one with a longer client list. Domain knowledge shortens the research, and it shows in the questions they ask you before writing anything.

## How to judge writing samples

Reading samples for “quality” is a trap; almost everything you are sent will be competent. Read for fit and for evidence of thinking.

- **Same reader, not same industry.** A piece written to persuade a cautious small-business owner transfers to your job even if the subject is unrelated. A polished article for a different kind of reader does not.
- **Does it say anything?** Strip out the adjectives and ask what claim remains. Filler prose is the commonest failure and it is invisible until you look for it.
- **Structure.** Read only the headings. If the argument is clear from those alone, the writer can organise thought — the rarest and most valuable skill on offer.
- **Specificity.** Numbers, examples, named trade-offs. Generic writing is what you get when the brief was thin or the writer did not care; either way it is a signal.
- **Does it match the constraint?** If your job is 80-word product descriptions, a 2,000-word essay tells you little. Ask for something the same shape.
- **Reviews as a pattern.** Look for repeated mentions of research, deadlines and taking direction. On Zinn Hub reviews require a confirmed purchase.

Our [12-step freelancer vetting checklist](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/how-to-vet-a-freelancer/) turns this into a repeatable process, including how to check that a sample is genuinely the candidate’s own work.

## AI-assisted writing: what to ask

AI tools are now part of most writers’ workflow, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The useful question is not whether a writer uses them but what they use them for and what they do afterwards.

Ask directly and treat a straight answer as a good sign. Research, outlining and first drafts are legitimate uses that speed up a professional without replacing their judgement. What you are paying for is the part machines are worst at: original angle, verified facts, your specific knowledge, and a voice that sounds like a person.

Two things to insist on regardless. **Fact-checking.** Any statistic, quotation, price or citation must be verified against a real source, and the writer should be able to tell you where each one came from. **Accountability.** The writer is responsible for what they deliver, whatever produced the draft. If a piece arrives with confident claims nobody can source, that is a delivery failure, not a technology issue.

Be wary of the opposite failure too: judging copy solely by whether it “sounds like AI”. Plain, clear, unadorned writing is often exactly what a business page needs. Judge the substance.

## Questions to ask before you hire

- What will you need from meThe best answer is a specific list — access to a customer, your pricing, three real objections. A writer who needs nothing from you will write something anyone could have written.
- How do you researchInterviews, product access, source documents, search. Listen for how they verify rather than how they gather.
- Your processOutline first, or straight to draft? An outline for approval before writing is the single best way to avoid an expensive misunderstanding.
- Revisions and rightsHow many rounds, what counts as a round, and what rights transfer on payment. Get all three in writing.
- Byline and confidentialityWill they need credit? May they show the work as a sample? Ghostwriting arrangements should be explicit on both.
- CapacityIf you plan a series, ask what a sustainable monthly volume looks like. Overcommitted writers miss deadlines long before quality drops.

## Test before you commit

Never commission twenty articles from someone you have not worked with. Buy one, properly briefed and properly paid, and treat it as the interview.

Judge it on four things. Did they ask a question before starting, or assume? Did they answer the brief rather than the topic? Are the facts sourced and correct? And did it arrive when they said it would, in the format you asked for? A writer who scores well on all four is worth more than one whose prose is marginally more elegant.

On Zinn Hub the natural format is a **Micro Zinn** at $5, $10, $15 or $20 — small enough to be a genuine test rather than a commitment. Try [articles and blog posts](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/articles-blog/), [product descriptions](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/product-descriptions/), [sales and ad copy](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/sales-copy/) or [proofreading and editing](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/proofreading-editing/), or start from a price with [$15 Micro Zinns](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/price/15/). Our guide on [testing a freelancer before you commit](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/test-a-freelancer-before-you-hire/) covers how to structure the test.

## What writing costs

Writing is priced by the piece, by the word or by the day, and the same job can be quoted all three ways. These are typical market bands for a piece of business writing, not Zinn Hub prices, and every freelancer sets their own.

- Short piece
  $5–$50
Product descriptions, social captions, a short email, a proofread of a page. Fast, defined, best bought at a fixed price.
- Standard article
  $50–$250
A researched 800 to 1,500-word blog post or guide, with headings and light search optimisation, written from a proper brief.
- Specialist
  $250–$1,000
Conversion copy for a key page, technical documentation, a long-form pillar piece, or writing in a regulated or highly technical field.
- Strategic
  $1,000+
A full site of copy, a content strategy with a production plan, a white paper, or ghostwritten thought leadership involving interviews.

Costs vary by scope, complexity and experience. One caution about per-word pricing: it rewards length, and length is rarely what you wanted. A tighter 600-word page frequently outperforms a padded 1,200-word one, so price the piece and its job rather than its volume.

On Zinn Hub, every Zinn carries a price set by its Zinner, buyers pay no platform fee, and all prices are in USD with an approximate equivalent shown in your own currency. An order is paid and protected as one whole amount — there is no staged or milestone release — so a series is placed as separate orders or agreed as separately priced batches in your project brief. Choose a Platform Protected Zinner and your payment is held by Zinn Hub until the order completes; any refund is credited to your Zinn Wallet in full, in USD. Zinners who connect their own PayPal or Stripe account are paid directly at checkout instead.

## Edits, rights and bylines

Three things to settle in writing before a word is written, because all three become awkward afterwards.

**Edits.** Agree the number of rounds and what a round is: one consolidated set of notes, not a stream of comments over several days. Agree also what counts as a revision rather than a new brief — tightening a paragraph is a revision; changing the target audience is a new job, and a fair writer will say so.

**Rights.** Commissioned writing is normally intended to transfer to the buyer on payment, but the rules differ by country and by contract, so put your intention in the agreement rather than assuming it. Say plainly what you are buying: full ownership, or a licence to publish. Ask whether the writer may use an extract as a portfolio sample. None of this is legal advice — take professional advice on anything commercially significant.

**Bylines.** Decide whose name goes on it. Ghostwriting means the writer stays invisible and must not claim the piece; that is a normal arrangement and it should be stated rather than assumed. If a byline is shared, agree it before publication rather than in the comments afterwards.

## Mistakes that produce bad copy

- **Briefing a topic instead of a job.** “Write about our software” produces an article about your software that persuades nobody.
- **Withholding the facts.** The writer cannot know your objections, your prices or your customers’ real questions. Every fact you supply raises the quality and lowers the cost.
- **Hiring across specialisms.** A content writer is not a copywriter and neither is an editor. Match the trade to the task.
- **Buying by the word.** You will get length. Buy the outcome instead.
- **Skipping the outline.** Approving a structure takes ten minutes and prevents rewriting a finished draft.
- **Editing the voice out.** Endless internal edits average a piece down to something safe and forgettable. Nominate one decision-maker.
- **Commissioning a series untested.** One paid piece first, every time.
- **Missing the warning signs.** Samples that appear elsewhere under another name, unsourced statistics and pressure to pay outside the platform are all covered in [common freelancer scams](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/common-freelancer-scams/).

If you are still deciding between a freelancer and an agency for your content, [freelancer vs agency](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelancer-vs-agency/) compares them for a small business budget, and [what freelance SEO costs](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelance-seo-cost/) is worth reading if search visibility is the real goal behind the words.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a copywriter and a content writer?

A copywriter writes to persuade — landing pages, ads, emails, product descriptions — and is judged on whether people act. A content writer writes to inform and to be found, in longer, research-led pieces such as guides and blog posts. Both are skilled trades, and asking one to do the other’s job usually disappoints everyone.

Should I pay a writer per word or per piece?

Per piece, in almost every case. Paying per word rewards length, and length is rarely what you wanted — a tight 600-word page often outperforms a padded 1,200-word one. Agree the deliverable, its purpose and roughly the length you expect, then price the job rather than its volume.

How do I know if a writing sample is really theirs?

Search a distinctive sentence from the sample and see where it appears and under whose name. Ask which parts of a co-authored piece were theirs. Then buy one small paid piece written to your brief: work produced for you under a real agreement is the only sample that cannot have come from somewhere else.

Is it acceptable for a freelance writer to use AI tools?

Ask, and treat a straight answer well. Research, outlining and first drafts are legitimate uses that speed up a professional without replacing their judgement. What you should insist on is that every statistic, quotation and citation is verified against a real source, and that the writer is accountable for whatever they deliver.

How much does it cost to hire a freelance writer?

As typical market ranges rather than Zinn Hub prices: short pieces from around $5 to $50, a researched article roughly $50 to $250, specialist or conversion copy about $250 to $1,000, and strategic work above that. Costs vary by scope, complexity and experience, and every freelancer sets their own price.

Who owns the writing once I have paid for it?

Commissioned work is normally intended to transfer to the buyer on payment, but the rules differ between countries and contracts, so state your intention in the agreement rather than assuming it. Say whether you are buying full ownership or a licence to publish, and whether the writer may use an extract as a sample. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How many revision rounds should I expect?

Two is the common working standard. Agree what a round means — one consolidated set of notes rather than a trickle of comments — and agree what counts as a revision rather than a new brief. Tightening a paragraph is a revision; changing the target reader is a different job and should be priced as one.

Should I hire one writer or a different one for each piece?

For a consistent voice across a site or an ongoing series, one writer is better, and they get faster and cheaper as they learn your business. For distinct jobs — a landing page, a help centre, a translated version — hire the relevant specialist for each, because those are genuinely different trades.
