# How to Hire a Freelance Designer

Design is the one thing you can judge instantly and describe badly. This guide covers how to say what you want without art-directing, which kind of designer to hire for which job, how to read a portfolio past the pretty pictures, what files you must ask for, and how to give feedback that improves the work instead of flattening it.

The short answer

## How do I hire a freelance designer?

Decide which discipline you need first — brand, web, product or marketing design are different trades. Then brief the **problem** rather than the picture: audience, message, where it will be seen. Shortlist on portfolios that solve similar problems, agree revision rounds and the exact source files up front, and run one small paid job before a big one.

Prices are set by each Zinner and shown in USD; you can view an approximate equivalent in your own currency.

- ID- and skill-verified Zinners
- 0% buyer fees
- Micro Zinns $5–$20

Design is unusual among freelance categories because everybody has an opinion and almost nobody has the vocabulary. You know within a second whether you like something, and you have no reliable way of saying why. That gap is where design projects go wrong — not in the drawing, but in the describing.

The good news is that the fix is entirely within a buyer’s control. Designers do not need you to speak their language; they need you to be precise about the job the design has to do, who is looking at it, and what would count as success. Do that, hire someone whose past work solves problems shaped like yours, and the aesthetic argument mostly disappears. This guide covers how.

## Which kind of designer you need

“Designer” describes several different trades. They overlap at the edges, but hiring across them is the most common reason a talented person produces disappointing work.

- Brand and identityLogos, colour, typography, tone, and the rules that hold them together. Hire for a launch or a rebrand. Browse [logo design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/logo-design/) and [brand style guides](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/brand-style-guides/).
- Web and UIHow a site or app looks and behaves screen by screen. A different skill from brand design and often a different person. Browse [website UI/UX design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/website-design/website-ui-ux-design/).
- UXStructure, flow and decision-making before anything is styled. Hire when users get lost or drop out, not when a page merely looks dated. Browse [UX design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/ux-design/).
- Marketing and socialAds, social graphics, banners, decks, email templates. High volume, fast turnaround, template-friendly. Browse [social media design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/social-media-design/).
- Print and packagingAnything physical, where bleed, colour profiles and print specifications matter and mistakes are expensive to reprint.
- Illustration and motionOriginal artwork and animation. A distinct craft with its own portfolios — do not expect a brand designer to illustrate. Browse the [illustration marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/illustration-marketplace/).

If the job spans two of these — a new brand plus a website using it, say — either hire someone whose portfolio genuinely shows both, or hire in sequence and give the second designer the first one’s files.

## Define the job, not the look

The most useful thing you can bring to a designer is not a reference image. It is a clear statement of what the design must achieve and for whom.

Answer these four before you write a word of brief. **Who is looking at this?** Not “everyone” — a specific person with a specific reason to care. **Where will they see it?** A phone screen at arm’s length, a shelf at three metres, a slide behind a speaker. This constrains more design decisions than taste ever will. **What should they do next?** Click, call, trust, remember. **What must it sit beside?** An existing logo, a house font, a marketplace listing with its own frame.

Reference images are still useful, but as evidence rather than instruction. Give three examples you like and three you dislike, and say *why* in each case — “too corporate”, “too busy for a phone”, “the wrong century”. A designer can work with a reason. They cannot work with a mood board and silence.

## Writing a design brief that works

A good design brief fits on one page and answers questions before they are asked.

- **The deliverable, counted.** One logo with three variants, or five social templates, or twelve pages. Numbers stop scope arguments before they start.
- **Where each item will be used.** Web, print, embroidery, app icon — each has different technical requirements.
- **Existing assets.** Fonts you own, colours you must keep, photography you have, and anything the design must not contradict.
- **Constraints.** Legibility at small sizes, accessibility requirements, a language you must support, a platform’s image dimensions.
- **Revision rounds.** State the number. Two is a common, workable standard; open-ended revisions are priced in somewhere.
- **Final files.** Name the formats and whether source files are included. This is the clause buyers forget and regret.

Include a budget range. It is not a weakness; it is what lets a designer propose the right scale of solution instead of guessing. Our guide to [writing a project brief that gets great proposals](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/how-to-write-a-project-brief/) covers the general template, and [hourly vs fixed price](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelance-rates-explained-hourly-vs-fixed/) explains why a counted deliverable is what makes a fixed price possible.

## Where to find designers

Search from the work when the job is defined, and from the person when it needs discussion.

For defined work, browse fixed-price listings by discipline — [logo design](https://zinnhub.com/logo-design-marketplace/), [graphic design](https://zinnhub.com/graphic-design-marketplace/), [UX and UI design](https://zinnhub.com/ux-ui-design-marketplace/), [branding](https://zinnhub.com/branding-marketplace/), [infographic design](https://zinnhub.com/infographic-design-marketplace/) or [presentation design](https://zinnhub.com/marketplaces/presentation-design-marketplace/). Category pages such as [landing page design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/landing-page-design/) and [image editing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/image-editing/) narrow it further.

For work that needs a conversation, browse people instead: [graphic design freelancers](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/graphic-design/), [UI/UX design freelancers](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/ui-ux-design/) and [brand identity and style guide specialists](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/brand-identity-style-guides/), or by the tools they use — [Figma](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/figma/), [Adobe Illustrator](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/adobe-illustrator/), [Adobe Photoshop](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/adobe-photoshop/). Or post the brief: **posting a project is free**, and you can aim it at [logo design](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/logo-design/) or [UI/UX design](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/ui-ux-design/) and let proposals come to you.

Three to five candidates is the right number. Below that you have no comparison; above it you will not assess anyone properly.

## How to read a design portfolio

Every portfolio is a highlight reel, and pretty is the least informative thing in it. Look for the things that are hard to fake.

- **Range within a discipline, not across all of them.** Ten logos in ten visual directions shows a designer who solves problems. Ten logos in one style shows a designer with a signature — wonderful if it is your style, a problem if it is not.
- **Applied work, not just artwork.** A logo on a white square proves very little. The same logo on a shopfront, an app icon and an invoice proves it survives contact with reality.
- **Legibility at small sizes.** Shrink an image on your screen until it is thumbnail-sized. If it turns to mud, it will do the same on a phone.
- **A stated problem.** The best case studies say what the client needed and why the solution answers it. That sentence is worth more than the render above it.
- **Consistency of finish.** Alignment, spacing and typography discipline across pieces tell you about care, which predicts how your job will be handled.
- **Reviews as a pattern.** Look for repeated mentions of responsiveness and taking direction. On Zinn Hub reviews require a confirmed purchase.

Our [12-step freelancer vetting checklist](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/how-to-vet-a-freelancer/) turns this into a repeatable process.

## Questions to ask before you hire

- Why this solutionPick a portfolio piece and ask what the client needed and why the design answers it. A designer who can only describe the aesthetic is a decorator, which may be fine — but know which you are buying.
- What is includedHow many concepts, how many revision rounds, which final formats, and whether source files come with it. Get this in writing.
- Source filesAsk explicitly. Some designers include them, some charge separately, some never release them. All are legitimate; only the surprise is not.
- Fonts and stockWho buys the licences, and are they transferable to you? Font and image licensing is a genuine cost and a genuine legal risk if it is skipped.
- OwnershipConfirm what rights transfer on payment, and whether the work may appear in their portfolio. Terms differ by jurisdiction and contract, so this is general guidance rather than legal advice.
- What they need from youCopy, photography, logins, product samples. A designer who asks for a list before quoting is a designer who has done this before.

## Test before you commit

Do not ask for free concepts. It is the industry’s oldest bad practice, strong designers decline it, and you end up choosing from whoever was desperate enough to say yes.

Buy something small instead. A single social graphic, a header image, one slide template, a logo cleanup, a background removal — anything real, paid and finishable in a sitting. What you learn is not whether they can draw; you already saw that in the portfolio. You learn whether they read the brief, whether they asked before assuming, whether the file arrived in the format you asked for, and whether the timescale they quoted was the timescale you got.

On Zinn Hub that is a **Micro Zinn**, fixed at $5, $10, $15 or $20. Try [logo design](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/logo-design/), [social media graphics](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/social-graphics/) or start from a price with [$10 Micro Zinns](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/price/10/). Our guide on [testing a freelancer before you commit](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/test-a-freelancer-before-you-hire/) covers how to judge the result.

## What design costs

Design prices vary enormously with scope and with how much strategy sits behind the artwork. These are typical market bands, not Zinn Hub prices, and every freelancer sets their own.

- Single asset
  $5–$100
One graphic, a banner, a thumbnail, an edit or a template tweak. Fast, defined, and best bought at a fixed price.
- Logo or small set
  $100–$800
A logo with variants and basic usage notes, a small template family, or a set of marketing graphics with shared styling.
- Brand or web design
  $800–$4,000
A full identity with a style guide, or the design of a multi-page site or app, including responsive layouts and a component set.
- Strategic
  $4,000+
Positioning and research alongside the visual work, multi-format rollout, or a design system intended to be used by other people.

Costs vary by scope, complexity and experience — use the bands to sanity-check a quote rather than as a tariff. For a category-specific figure, our [logo design cost guide](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/logo-design-cost/) goes deeper.

On Zinn Hub, every Zinn carries a price set by its Zinner, buyers pay no platform fee, and all prices are in USD with an approximate equivalent shown in your own currency. An order is paid and protected as one whole amount — there is no staged or milestone release — so a phased identity project is placed as separate orders or agreed as separately priced phases in your brief. Choose a Platform Protected Zinner and your payment is held by Zinn Hub until the order completes; any refund is credited to your Zinn Wallet in full, in USD. Zinners who connect their own PayPal or Stripe account are paid directly at checkout instead.

## Files, formats and what to demand

The difference between a design you own and a design you rent is the file list. Agree it before work starts, and confirm delivery before the job is closed.

- Vector originalsFor logos and icons, an SVG, EPS or AI file. Vectors scale to any size without loss; a PNG does not. A logo delivered only as a PNG is a logo you will pay to redraw.
- Web exportsPNG or SVG at the sizes you actually use, plus a transparent version and a version that works on a dark background.
- Print filesPrint-ready PDF with correct colour profile and bleed. Ask the printer for their specification and pass it to the designer before the artwork is finished.
- Editable sourcesThe working file — Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign. Without it, every future change goes back to the same person or starts again.
- Fonts and licencesThe names of every typeface used and who holds the licence. Never assume a font is free because it was on the designer’s machine.
- Usage notesColour values, minimum sizes, clear space, and what not to do. One page is enough and it prevents years of drift.

## Giving feedback that improves the work

Feedback is a skill, and buyers rarely realise how much of the outcome depends on it. The rule is simple: describe the problem, not the fix.

“Make the logo bigger” is a fix, and often the wrong one. “It does not stand out enough when I see it on my phone” is a problem, and a designer can solve it in three ways you would not have thought of. Every time you specify a solution you are doing their job with less training than they have.

Four more habits that make a measurable difference. **Consolidate.** One set of notes per round, agreed internally first — a trickle of individual comments over three days is the fastest way to burn goodwill and a revision round at the same time. **Separate taste from function.** Say which comments are personal preference and which are business requirements; designers will push back on the first and must act on the second. **Be specific about location.** “The third section” beats “that bit in the middle”. **Say what works.** Not politeness — information. If you do not say the type treatment is right, it may not survive the next round.

## Mistakes that ruin design projects

- **Briefing a picture instead of a problem.** If your brief is a link to a competitor, you have commissioned an imitation, not a solution.
- **Hiring across disciplines.** A brilliant illustrator is not a UX designer. Match the portfolio to the job shape.
- **Design by committee.** Five opinions average out to something nobody chose. Nominate one decision-maker and let the others advise.
- **Not asking for source files.** The single most expensive omission in freelance design, and it costs nothing to ask about up front.
- **Ignoring licensing.** Fonts and stock imagery carry terms. Using them wrongly is your risk, not the designer’s.
- **Approving on a desktop only.** Most of your audience is on a phone. Look at everything there before you sign it off.
- **Endless revisions.** Past two or three rounds the work usually gets worse, not better. If you are still going, the brief was wrong.
- **Missing the warning signs.** Pressure to pay outside the platform, portfolio work that appears elsewhere under another name, and vague answers about files are all covered in [common freelancer scams](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/common-freelancer-scams/).

If you are weighing up a designer against a studio, [freelancer vs agency](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelancer-vs-agency/) compares the two for a small business budget.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a graphic designer and a UX designer?

A graphic designer works on how something looks and communicates — identity, layout, marketing assets. A UX designer works on how something is structured and used, often before any styling exists. If people are getting lost or dropping out, you need UX. If the thing works but looks tired, you need graphic or web design.

Should I ask for free concepts before choosing a designer?

No. Experienced designers decline unpaid concept work, so you filter out the people you most wanted and choose from whoever was available. A small paid job is fairer and far more revealing, because you see how someone reads a brief, asks questions and delivers under a real agreement.

What files should I get when a design project finishes?

For a logo, vector originals such as SVG, EPS or AI, plus web exports and a transparent version. For print, a print-ready PDF with the correct colour profile and bleed. Ask for the editable source file too, along with the names of every font used and who holds the licence. Agree all of this before work starts.

How many revision rounds should a design job include?

Two is the common working standard, with further rounds priced separately. What matters more than the number is that it is written down and that you both agree what a round means — one consolidated set of notes, not a stream of individual comments spread over several days.

How much does it cost to hire a freelance designer?

As typical market ranges rather than Zinn Hub prices: a single asset from around $5 to $100, a logo or small set roughly $100 to $800, a full identity or website design around $800 to $4,000, and strategic work above that. Costs vary by scope, complexity and experience, and every freelancer sets their own price.

Do I own the design once I have paid for it?

That depends on what you agreed and where you are, so put it in writing before work starts. Ask which rights transfer on final payment, whether source files are included, and whether the designer may show the work in their portfolio. Fonts and stock imagery carry separate licences. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How do I give design feedback without sounding vague?

Describe the problem rather than prescribing the fix. “It does not stand out on my phone” is more useful than “make it bigger”, because a designer can solve it several ways. Consolidate your notes into one round, separate personal preference from business requirements, and say clearly which parts are working.

Can one designer do my logo and my website?

Sometimes, but check the portfolio shows both rather than assuming. Brand design and web design are related trades with different skills. If you cannot find one person who is genuinely strong at both, hire in sequence and give the second designer the first one’s source files and usage notes.
