# How Much Does Social Media Management Cost?

Social media management is sold as a monthly retainer, a per-post rate and an hourly rate, and the same “manage my socials” brief can produce quotes from $200 to $5,000 a month. This guide explains what sits inside each price band, which variables move it, and how to buy the service without overpaying for posts you did not need.

The short answer

## How much does social media management cost per month?

Freelance social media management commonly costs **$300 to $1,500 a month** for a small business on two or three platforms, with basic scheduling-only packages below that and full strategy, video content and paid social well above. These are typical market ranges, not Zinn Hub prices — costs vary by platform count, content volume and experience.

Prices are set by each Zinner and shown in USD; you can view an approximate equivalent in your own currency.

- 0% buyer fees
- Micro Zinns $5–$20
- All prices in USD

“How much to run my social media?” is one of the hardest questions in freelancing to answer, because the service has no fixed shape. To one person it means scheduling twelve posts a month from images you supply. To another it means strategy, filming, editing, community management, paid campaigns and a monthly report. Both are honestly called social media management, and one costs ten times the other.

That ambiguity is why buyers so often feel overcharged and freelancers so often feel underpaid on the same contract. The fix is not haggling. It is deciding what you are actually buying, in a specific enough way that two quotes describe the same work. This guide sets out the price bands, what sits inside each one, and the handful of decisions that move the number more than anything else.

## What social media management costs: the typical ranges

Monthly retainers are the dominant model, and they cluster into four broad bands. What separates them is not effort per post — it is how much of the work is *producing* content versus *publishing* it.

- Basic
  $150–$500 / month
One or two platforms, roughly 8–16 posts, captions and scheduling. You supply images and product information. Light or no engagement work.
- Standard
  $500–$1,500 / month
Two to three platforms, a content calendar, original graphics, community management on a defined schedule, and a monthly report you can read.
- Advanced
  $1,500–$4,000 / month
Strategy, original video and short-form production, active engagement, influencer or partnership outreach, and analytics with recommendations attached.
- Full service
  $4,000+ / month
Multi-platform, multi-market or multi-language programmes with a team behind them, paid social managed alongside organic, and continuous production.

**These are typical market ranges, not Zinn Hub prices.** Costs vary by scope, complexity and experience, and on a marketplace every Zinner sets their own price. Hourly work commonly runs from around $20 to $100 an hour, and standalone posts are frequently quoted at $20 to $150 each depending on whether the asset is designed, filmed or simply written.

## Retainer, per post or per hour

Each model suits a different situation, and picking the wrong one is the most common way buyers overspend.

- Monthly retainer The default. Buys continuity, a plan and someone who knows your business. Best value once you are posting regularly, and the only model under which strategy makes sense.
- Per post or per asset Clean and easy to compare, but it pays for output rather than results and quietly rewards posting more. Good for topping up a calendar you already run.
- Hourly Sensible for ad-hoc support, audits, account clean-ups and training. Poor for anything ongoing, because the incentives point the wrong way for both sides.
- Project One number for a defined piece of work: a strategy document, a 90-day launch campaign, a profile overhaul. The right way to start before committing to a retainer.

A sensible sequence for most small businesses is a paid **audit or strategy project first**, then a modest retainer, then scale the retainer once you can see what is working. Starting with an expensive open-ended retainer is how people end up paying for twenty posts a month that nobody reads.

## What is actually inside the monthly fee

Two quotes at the same price can contain wildly different work. These are the components to check off, one by one, in every proposal you receive.

- Strategy Audience, positioning, content pillars, posting cadence and what success is measured by. Frequently absent from cheaper packages, and its absence is why they feel aimless.
- Content calendar A plan you approve in advance rather than posts appearing unannounced. Ask to see a sample month before you sign anything.
- Content production Graphics, photography, video, copywriting. The single biggest cost variable — see the next section.
- Publishing Scheduling, formatting per platform, hashtags, alt text. The cheapest part of the job, and the part buyers imagine they are paying for.
- Community management Replying to comments and messages, and joining conversations. Ask what response window is included — and treat any promise of round-the-clock cover with scepticism.
- Reporting Numbers, plus what they mean and what changes next month. A screenshot of a follower count is not a report.
- Paid social Almost always a separate line, with its own fee and a budget you pay directly to the platform. See below.

Ask for the proposal to be broken down against exactly this list. A freelancer who can do that quickly is telling you they have thought about the work; one who cannot is quoting a feeling.

## Content production is the real cost centre

Here is the thing most buyers get wrong. Publishing a post takes minutes. *Having something worth publishing* is the entire job, and it is where the money goes.

Sort the content in your calendar by how it is made, and the price differences become obvious immediately:

- **Repurposed content.** Cropping, re-captioning and rescheduling things you already have. Cheapest per post by a wide margin.
- **Designed graphics.** Templated brand graphics with new copy each time. Inexpensive once the templates exist — expect a one-off setup cost to create them.
- **Written original content.** Genuinely useful posts that need thinking about. Cheap in materials, expensive in attention.
- **Photography.** Products, premises, people. Either a shoot day or a rolling arrangement, and either way a separate budget line.
- **Short-form video.** The most expensive and the most effective. Filming and editing are real production work, whoever is holding the phone.

If your budget is tight, the highest-leverage move is not fewer posts — it is supplying raw material. Send photos, product shots, footage from your phone, customer questions and half-formed ideas. A manager working from your raw material produces better content more cheaply than one inventing it from nothing, and it sounds like your business rather than like a template. Browse [social media design](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/graphics-and-design/social-media-design/) services if you need the templates built once, and [short-form video creation](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/video-and-animation/short-form-video-creation/) if video is the gap.

## Why the number of platforms changes the price

Every extra platform is not simply another place to paste the same post. Each has its own format, its own aspect ratios, its own tone and its own audience expectations, and each one needs its comments read. Adding a fourth platform to a package frequently adds more cost than adding twenty per cent more posts to the existing three.

The economics also differ sharply by platform. Text-and-image networks are relatively cheap to maintain. Video-first platforms are not, because content there cannot be repurposed lazily and still perform. A quote that treats every platform as interchangeable has not thought about it.

The advice almost every experienced manager gives, and almost every buyer resists, is to **do fewer platforms properly**. Two well-run accounts beat five neglected ones, cost less and are far easier to judge. Start with the platforms where your customers already are, and add another only when the first ones are working. If a specific network is your priority, you can hire against it directly — for example [Instagram marketing](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/instagram-marketing/), [LinkedIn marketing](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/linkedin-marketing/) or the [TikTok marketing marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/marketplaces/tiktok-marketing-marketplace/).

## Where paid social sits, and why it is priced separately

Organic social media management and paid social advertising are different services, and conflating them is one of the more expensive misunderstandings in this market.

Your advertising budget is money you pay to the platform. The management fee is money you pay the person running the campaigns. Two common commercial models exist: a percentage of ad spend, frequently quoted somewhere between 10% and 20%, or a flat monthly management fee independent of spend. Small budgets usually favour the flat fee, because a percentage of a small spend does not pay for competent work.

Three things to settle before any money moves:

- **Whose ad account is it?** It should be yours, with the freelancer given access. Campaign history and audience data are assets, and they should not leave when the freelancer does.
- **Who holds the card?** Pay the platform directly wherever you can. Routing ad spend through someone else’s account makes it invisible to you.
- **What is the fee based on?** Percentage or flat, and what happens when the budget changes.

If paid campaigns are your main goal rather than an add-on, hire for that explicitly — the [PPC marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/ppc-marketplace/) and [digital marketing](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/digital-marketing/) listings are a better starting point than a general social package.

## Freelancer, agency or in-house

The right answer depends far more on how much production you need than on how big your business is.

- Freelancer Usually the strongest value for a small business. You get the person doing the work, not an account manager relaying instructions. The limits are capacity and cover during holidays — agree what happens when they are away.
- Agency Buys capacity, process and specialists across disciplines. Worth the overhead when you need a designer, a videographer and a strategist working together, or when several stakeholders must be managed.
- In-house Only starts to make financial sense at genuinely high content volume, and it brings recruitment, management and continuity problems of its own.
- Hybrid Increasingly common and often the strongest of the three: someone internal owns the voice and the relationships, and a freelancer handles production, scheduling and reporting.

Our guide on [freelancer versus agency](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/freelancer-vs-agency/) goes into the trade-off in more depth. The blunt test: if the work needs more than one person at the same time, you want a team; if it does not, you are paying overhead for nothing.

## Briefing so the quotes are comparable

Most divergent quotes come from a brief that said “manage our social media” and nothing else. Answer these eight points and your quotes will suddenly be about the same job.

- Platforms Which ones, and which matters most. Not “all the usual ones”.
- Volume Posts per week per platform, and how many should be video.
- Who makes the content What you supply versus what they create. The biggest single lever on price.
- Engagement Whether replying to comments and messages is included, and within what window.
- Goal Awareness, enquiries, recruitment, sales. These produce completely different calendars.
- Approval Whether you sign off every post or trust the calendar. Per-post approval is real, chargeable time.
- Paid social In or out, and the monthly ad budget if in.
- Reporting What you want to see each month, and what decision it should inform.

If you would rather have managers come to you, [post a social media marketing project](https://zinnhub.com/projects/category/social-media-marketing/) free with your budget and brief, and choose from the proposals that come back.

## Red flags in a social media management quote

- **A follower-growth guarantee.** Nobody controls a platform’s reach, and guaranteed growth is usually bought followers, which actively harm an account.
- **Bought engagement of any kind.** Likes, comments and followers sold by the thousand poison your audience data and can put the account at risk.
- **A price with no content plan behind it.** If nobody has asked who your customers are, the calendar will be generic.
- **Round-the-clock coverage promises.** Treat any always-on claim as marketing unless there is a named schedule and a named person behind it.
- **Reporting that is only follower counts.** Followers are the least useful number on the dashboard.
- **They want to own the accounts.** Your accounts, your ad account, your data. Access, never ownership.
- **No exit terms.** Agree notice periods and handover up front, while everyone is still getting along.

## De-risking the hire before a retainer

A retainer is an ongoing commitment, and social media is a service where taste matters as much as competence. Someone can be technically excellent and still produce content that sounds nothing like your business.

Buy something small first. A paid audit of your existing accounts, a one-month content calendar, or a batch of five posts tells you far more than a portfolio does: whether they ask about your customers before writing anything, whether the captions sound like you, and how they respond to a note asking for changes.

On Zinn Hub, **Micro Zinns** — fixed-price services at $5, $10, $15 or $20 — are made for exactly this kind of small, defined trial. Browse [social media management Micro Zinns](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/category/social-media-management/), look at what is available [at the $15 tier](https://zinnhub.com/micro-zinns/price/15/), or read our guide to [testing a freelancer before you commit](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/test-a-freelancer-before-you-hire/). Then start with a one-month or three-month agreement rather than an open-ended one, and extend it when it is earning its place.

## What it costs to hire on Zinn Hub

Buyers pay no platform fee on Zinn Hub — the price you see is the price you pay, and nothing is added at checkout. All prices are in USD; you can view an approximate equivalent in your own currency across 59 display currencies, but USD is always what you are charged.

There are three routes. Order a fixed-price service outright from the [social media marketing marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/social-media-marketing-marketplace/), the [social media design marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/marketplaces/social-media-design-marketplace/) or the [influencer marketing marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/influencer-marketing-marketplace/). Post a project free with your platforms and content volume, and choose from the proposals. Or browse managers directly — [social media marketing freelancers](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/category/social-media-marketing/), narrowed to a single skill such as [social media management](https://zinnhub.com/freelancers/skill/social-media-management/) — and invite the Zinners you like into your brief. The [social media marketing category](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/digital-marketing/social-media-marketing/), [social media copywriting](https://zinnhub.com/zinns-category/writing-and-translation/social-media-copywriting/) and services tagged [social media management](https://zinnhub.com/zinner-skills/social-media-management/) are three more ways in. If written content is the gap rather than the posting, start with the [content writing marketplace](https://zinnhub.com/content-writing-marketplace/), or read our guide to [what content writing costs](https://zinnhub.com/buyer-guides/how-much-does-content-writing-cost/).

On the seller side the fee structure is published in full on our [pricing page](https://zinnhub.com/pricing/): 0% commission on your first $500, then tiered rates that fall as you sell — as low as 7% on Agency Zinner. None of that is charged to you; it is deducted on the Zinner’s side of the order.

Payment protection depends on how your chosen Zinner is set up. Choose a Platform Protected Zinner and your payment is held by Zinn Hub until the order completes — the whole order, as a single amount. If anything is refunded, it is credited to your Zinn Wallet in full, in USD. For a recurring arrangement, most buyers place each month as its own order, which keeps every commitment small and easy to stop.

## Frequently asked questions

Is social media management always a monthly retainer?

No, though retainers are the most common model because the work is continuous. Per-post pricing suits topping up a calendar you already run; hourly suits audits, clean-ups and training; a fixed project fee suits a strategy document or a launch campaign. A sensible sequence is a paid audit or strategy project first, then a modest retainer you scale once you can see what is working.

How much should I pay per post?

As a market rate, standalone posts are commonly quoted between $20 and $150 each, and the spread is almost entirely about how the asset is made. A written caption on an image you supply sits at the bottom; a designed graphic sits in the middle; a filmed and edited short-form video sits at the top or above it. Buying in a monthly batch is usually cheaper per post than commissioning individually.

Does the monthly fee include my advertising budget?

It should not, and if a quote is ambiguous about this, ask. Your ad budget is money paid to the platform; the management fee is money paid to the person running the campaigns. Management is commonly charged either as a percentage of ad spend, frequently in the 10% to 20% region, or as a flat monthly fee. Small budgets usually favour the flat fee. Keep the ad account in your own name and pay the platform directly.

How many platforms should I start with?

Fewer than you want to. Two well-run accounts consistently beat five neglected ones, cost considerably less and are much easier to judge. Each additional platform brings its own formats, tone and comment thread, so a fourth platform often adds more cost than twenty per cent more posts on the existing three. Start where your customers already are and add another only once the first ones are working.

Do I need someone in my own time zone?

For most social media work, no. Scheduling tools mean posts go out at the right local moment for your audience regardless of where the manager is. Where it does matter is live response — comments during a launch, or replies to customer messages within a short window. If that matters to you, agree a specific coverage window in writing and check the current local time in their location when you set it, rather than assuming a fixed difference: daylight-saving rules differ by country and change during the year, so a gap you calculate today may not hold in three months. You can ask any Zinner about their working hours directly before you order.

How long before social media management shows results?

Longer than most people budget for. Engagement and reach usually move within the first month or two because posting consistency alone improves them, but enquiries and sales attributable to social typically take several months of consistent output. Judge a manager in the first month on process, calendar quality and how well the content sounds like you — not on revenue.

Who owns the accounts and the content?

You should, on both counts. Create the accounts and the ad account in your own name and give the freelancer access rather than ownership, so the history, audiences and data stay with you when the arrangement ends. Content rights are set by what you agree, so put it in writing before work starts, including what happens to unpublished assets on exit. This is general guidance rather than legal advice; the rules vary by country.

Can I get useful social media help for under $100 a month?

Only if the scope matches the money — as a market rate, not a Zinn Hub price. At that level you are buying help with a specific task rather than a managed service: a batch of captions, a set of templates you reuse, or a monthly scheduling session for content you produce. What does not fit that budget is strategy, original video or community management. Micro Zinns are fixed-price at $5 to $20 and suit exactly these small, defined tasks.
